When is the Liefkenshoek Tunnel toll-free?

The decision to make the Liefkenshoek Tunnel toll-free depends on a number of strict criteria.

For example:

     - It must be a very serious and unforeseen incident.

     - The incident causes major traffic disruptions.

     - The Liefkenshoek Tunnel route is a fully-fledged alternative to promote traffic flow on the Antwerp Ring.

If the situation meets these and other criteria, the Flemish Traffic Center can decide in consultation with the highway police to temporarily make the Liefkenshoek Tunnel toll-free.

Other criteria (number of axles, use, height, weight, type of driving license or a combination thereof) are not used to define a category!

Why do we use flow control?

In the event of major traffic congestion (especially in the evening rush hour in the direction of the Netherlands), the traffic flow is restricted by applying lane closures. By doing this, the tunnel operators try to ensure that there is no traffic jam in the tunnel. To achieve this, a few toll lanes are closed at the toll plaza, taking into account the various payment options. Due to the application of the aforementioned measure, if there is a traffic jam, it does not get longer but moves from the tunnel to the toll plaza, thus increasing safety for the tunnel users.

Works

When will the next maintenance work take place?

An overview of the planned works can be found here.

Between what times does maintenance work take place?

Maintenance work is always carried out according to the same procedure: on Thursday the tunnel shaft in the direction of Beveren is closed for all traffic. On Friday the tunnel shaft in the direction of Stabroek is closed. The respective directions of travel are completely closed at the Liefkenshoek Tunnel for all traffic at 9 pm, until 5 am the next day.
